The southern shores of Lago Maggiore unfold like the closing pages of a love story, peaceful, golden, and deeply Italian. Here, Arona and Angera face each other across the water like lifelong companions, divided by a glimmering lake yet bound by centuries of faith, legend, and beauty.
In this episode of the Immersion Travel Italy Podcast, join me, Katerina Ferrara, as we explore the spiritual and historic heart of the lake, where saints, fortresses, and quiet piazzas tell stories that linger long after you leave.
🌅 Arona: The Saint, the Statue, and the Spirit of the Lake
Morning light drapes softly across Arona, bathing terracotta rooftops in gold. This serene town, less crowded than Stresa or Verbania, was the birthplace of Saint Charles Borromeo, one of Italy’s most beloved saints. His compassion during the plague of 1576 made him a symbol of courage and devotion, and his legacy still watches over the lake in bronze.
🗿 Climb the Colossus of San Carlo (Sancarlone)
Towering above Arona, the Sancarlone is one of Europe’s most impressive monuments, a 35-meter-tall copper statue built in the 1600s. Visitors can climb a spiral staircase inside and peer through the saint’s eyes for a panoramic view stretching from Monte Rosa to the Borromean Islands.
Arrive early for clear skies and golden light. The view from the terrace feels like standing inside history itself, serene, humbling, and unforgettable.
⛪ Sanctuary and the Historic Center
Below the statue lies the Sanctuary of San Carlo, filled with frescoes depicting the saint’s life. From here, a tree-lined path leads into Arona’s charming old town, where cobblestone alleys open to the Lungolago di Arona, one of the lake’s most beautiful promenades.
Stop for an espresso at Caffè del Centro or a glass of local Nebbiolo at La Riva. On Sundays, the lakefront transforms into an open-air market of antiques, flowers, and Piedmontese delicacies, including Toma del Mottarone cheese, artisanal salumi, and jars of golden chestnut honey.
🏰 Across the Water: Angera and the Rocca di Angera
Crossing the lake by ferry, Angera rises like a medieval dream, a fortress of pale limestone perched high above the water. The Rocca di Angera, still owned by the noble Borromeo family, has stood since the 11th century and remains one of the best preserved castles in northern Italy.
🪆 The Museum of Dolls and Childhood
Inside the Rocca, the Museo della Bambola e del Giocattolo surprises visitors with its magical collection of over 1,200 dolls and toys. Founded by Princess Bona Borromeo Arese, it traces the evolution of childhood through centuries, from wooden dolls of the 1700s to Belle Époque porcelain beauties and Victorian automatons that still move with delicate precision.
🎨 Art, Gardens, and Hidden Views
Do not miss the Hall of Justice, with frescoes painted in 1314 that capture medieval life in rare color. Outside, the herb garden overflows with rosemary, sage, and lavender, a fragrant reconstruction of a 15th-century apothecary garden. From the Loggia Panoramica, framed by Gothic arches, the view over Arona and the glittering lake is pure poetry.
For a peaceful break, descend into town and enjoy a cappuccino and torta di pane at Caffè del Porto, a local institution since 1930. For lunch, Osteria Melograno serves fresh lake perch with herbs and olive oil from local farms, best enjoyed with a chilled glass of Erbaluce di Caluso.
🛶 Hidden Corners and Immersive Travel Tips
Both Arona and Angera are best explored slowly, by ferry, foot, or even bicycle. Rent a kayak to glide along the shoreline at sunset, or take the Lago Maggiore Bike Trail through Angera’s vineyards and chestnut woods. Visit Ranco, a nearby village with an open-air transport museum, or follow the Sentiero delle Rovine di Angera, a tranquil trail through ruins and forest views.
For total serenity, locals recommend the tiny Fornaci Beach near Ispra, smooth pebbles, calm waters, and uninterrupted views of the Rocca.
🍷 Where to Eat
Ristorante La Corte della Rocchetta (Arona): Romantic courtyard dining and exquisite risotto al pesce persico (perch risotto).
La Vecchia Angera (Angera): Seasonal menus inspired by both lake and mountain, including pasta al burro di malga e tartufo nero (black truffle pasta).
Bar Ponte (Angera): Perfect for sunset aperitivo overlooking the ferry dock, the lake glows silver as the evening bells ring.
Pair any meal with Gattinara DOCG, a ruby-red Piedmont wine, or try the locally produced Ronchi Varesini, a rare white wine found only in this region.
🏨 Where to Stay
Hotel Concorde (Arona): Elegant and central, with balconies right over the lake and a renowned breakfast spread.
Cascina Incocco (Arona): Charming farmhouse stay surrounded by vineyards, ideal for peaceful escapes.
Locanda dei Mai Intees (Angera): Ivy-covered historic inn with views across the lake to Arona.
Il Sole di Ranco (Ranco): A luxurious boutique hotel with Michelin star dining and sunsets you will never forget.
🕯️ Festivals and Seasonal Events
Arona celebrates its patron Saint Charles Borromeo every November with processions, concerts, and candlelit Masses at the Sancarlone Sanctuary, a deeply moving tradition that lights up the lake.
In July, Angera’s Festa Medievale alla Rocca transforms the fortress into a living medieval world, complete with knights, music, and torches glowing against the ancient walls.
✨ Final Reflection: The Soul of Lago Maggiore
From Arona’s statue of faith to Angera’s fortress of memory, the southern shores of Lago Maggiore tell a story of devotion, artistry, and quiet elegance. This is where time slows and beauty deepens, a place to walk, breathe, and rediscover the joy of travel that lingers in every reflection of the lake.
