Sicily’s Best Beaches, Islands, and Hidden Coastal Gems
When travelers dream of summer in Italy, many immediately picture the Amalfi Coast or the colorful villages of Cinque Terre. Yet Sicily offers something even more extraordinary. Here, active volcanoes rise above turquoise seas, ancient Greek cities sit beside golden beaches, and tiny islands preserve a slower rhythm of Mediterranean life.

The Aeolian Islands: Sicily’s Volcanic Paradise
One of my favorite Sicilian memories began aboard a ferry departing from Milazzo bound for Lipari.
As Sicily disappeared behind us, volcanic islands slowly emerged from the sea. Our Airbnb overlooked Lipari’s harbor, offering views of ferries arriving and departing throughout the day. Although our first evening brought a fierce thunderstorm, the following morning revealed brilliant sunshine and sparkling seas.

The largest of the Aeolian Islands, Lipari has been inhabited for over six thousand years and was once one of the Mediterranean’s most important sources of obsidian.
