Puglia has transformed from one of Italy’s best kept secrets into one of its most beloved summer destinations. Stretching along the heel of Italy’s famous boot, this sun drenched region offers more than 900 kilometers (560 miles) of coastline, two sparkling seas, whitewashed hill towns, extraordinary food traditions, and some of Italy’s most inviting beaches.

During our stay here, mornings began with peaceful walks through the historic center before the day trippers arrived. Evenings ended with gelato and unforgettable sea views.

If I had to choose a favorite town in Puglia, it would be Trani.
Its magnificent cathedral rises directly beside the sea, while the nearby Swabian Castle offers remarkable views of the harbor.
Our mornings here included coffee and pastries while fishermen prepared for the day ahead.
Otranto
Located at Italy’s easternmost edge, Otranto has long served as a gateway between East and West.

Known as the Florence of the South, Lecce dazzles visitors with Baroque architecture carved from honey colored limestone.
Evenings here are magical.
Bari Vecchia
One of Bari’s most beloved traditions continues in its narrow streets, where local women prepare orecchiette pasta by hand.
Buy some fresh pasta to take home, but remember to refrigerate it promptly.
Altamura
One of my favorite Puglian memories involved something wonderfully simple: bread.
At Antico Forno Santa Caterina, we watched bakers maneuver enormous loaves of Pane di Altamura inside traditional wood fired ovens using extraordinarily long wooden peels.
We carried our warm loaf through the streets of Altamura, tearing off pieces as we walked.
Sometimes the simplest experiences become the most memorable.
Swimming beneath Polignano remains one of my favorite memories from Puglia.
