When most travelers think of Liguria, one destination immediately comes to mind: the Cinque Terre. And while those five colorful villages deserve every bit of their worldwide fame, they’re only the beginning of one of Italy’s most spectacular coastal regions.
On this week’s episode of Immersion Travel Italy, we’re uncovering the hidden side of the Italian Riviera. From peaceful fishing villages and elegant seaside resorts to secret swimming coves, unforgettable boat excursions, and centuries old maritime traditions, Liguria offers experiences that reward travelers who venture beyond the postcard views.
Whether you’re planning your first visit or returning to discover more of the Riviera, this guide will help you experience Liguria more slowly, more deeply, and more authentically.

Why Liguria Is Unlike Anywhere Else in Italy
Stretching between the mountains and the Ligurian Sea, Liguria is one of Italy’s most dramatic landscapes. Here, steep cliffs plunge into turquoise waters, colorful villages cling to rocky hillsides, and ancient footpaths wind through vineyards overlooking the Mediterranean.
This is the birthplace of pesto Genovese, focaccia, and one of Italy’s great Maritime Republics. It is also home to glamorous seaside towns, hidden beaches accessible only by boat, and peaceful fishing villages where life still revolves around the sea.
One of the greatest joys of Liguria is that it naturally encourages slow travel. Take the ferry instead of the highway. Wander narrow alleyways without an itinerary. Stop for an afternoon swim before lingering over an aperitivo as the fishing boats return to harbor.
Liguria’s Five Summer Personalities
One of the reasons I love Liguria is that every part of the region feels completely different.
Cliffside Liguria
The dramatic landscapes of the Cinque Terre, Portovenere, and Tellaro where colorful villages tumble toward the sea.
Maritime Liguria
Historic ports like Genoa and Camogli, where centuries of seafaring traditions continue today.
Elegant Liguria
The palm lined promenades and Belle Époque villas of Santa Margherita Ligure, Rapallo, and Portofino.
Adventurous Liguria
Hiking, kayaking, diving, snorkeling, and mountain biking along one of Italy’s most scenic coastlines.
While the Cinque Terre deserves its legendary reputation, don’t miss these unforgettable destinations.
Camogli
If Portofino is Liguria’s showpiece, Camogli is its soul. Colorful homes line the harbor, fishing boats gently rock in the marina, and wonderful bakeries fill the air with the aroma of fresh focaccia. It’s also the perfect departure point for visiting the secluded Abbey of San Fruttuoso by boat.
Sestri Levante
Built on a narrow peninsula between two beautiful bays, Sestri Levante offers both the peaceful Bay of Silence and the lively Bay of Fairy Tales. Stay overnight if you can. Once the day visitors leave, the town becomes magical.
Santa Margherita Ligure
Often overshadowed by neighboring Portofino, Santa Margherita Ligure is actually one of the best places to base yourself while exploring the eastern Riviera. Elegant villas, waterfront cafés, and convenient ferry connections make it an ideal home base.
Finale Ligure
History, beaches, and outdoor adventure come together here. Explore medieval Finalborgo in the morning before cooling off in the remarkably clear Mediterranean waters.
Tellaro
One of Liguria’s best-kept secrets. This tiny fishing village overlooking the Gulf of Poets feels wonderfully untouched. Stone staircases lead to natural swimming spots, pastel houses tumble toward the sea, and sunsets here are unforgettable.
Summer Festivals That Celebrate Liguria’s Maritime Heritage
Summer in Liguria is filled with celebrations that reflect centuries of life on the sea.
Highlights include:
Palio del Golfo in La Spezia, one of Italy’s greatest traditional rowing competitions.
Madonna Bianca in Portovenere, when thousands of candles illuminate the entire village.
Festa di Stella Maris, honoring the protector of sailors with beautiful waterfront processions.
Andersen Festival in Sestri Levante, celebrating theater, storytelling, music, and creativity.
Ferragosto, celebrated throughout Liguria with fireworks, concerts, and lively seaside evenings.
Experience Liguria From the Water
If I could offer just one piece of advice, it would be this:
Spend at least one full day on the water.
Many of Liguria’s most beautiful places were historically easier to reach by boat than by road, and even today the coastline is best appreciated from the sea.
Some unforgettable experiences include:
Ferry from Camogli to San Fruttuoso
Boat ride between Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure
Exploring the Cinque Terre by ferry
Visiting Palmaria Island from Portovenere
Whale and dolphin watching in the Pelagos Marine Sanctuary between Italy, Monaco, and France
A Perfect Seven Day Liguria Itinerary
If you have a week to explore Liguria, consider this itinerary:
Day 1: Genoa and Boccadasse
Day 2: Camogli and San Fruttuoso
Day 3: Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino
Day 4: Sestri Levante
Day 5: Cinque Terre
Day 6: Portovenere and Tellaro
Day 7: Finale Ligure
Combining trains with ferries offers the perfect balance between convenience and unforgettable coastal scenery.
Final Thoughts
Liguria is so much more than the Cinque Terre.
It’s morning swims beneath dramatic cliffs. Quiet fishing villages where church bells echo across the harbor. Scenic ferries connecting timeless coastal towns. Hidden beaches, unforgettable sunsets, and meals that stretch long into warm Mediterranean evenings.
This is a region best experienced slowly, allowing each harbor, trail, and village to reveal its own story.
Perhaps that’s Liguria’s greatest summer secret.
